Vitamins, minerals and trace elements are essential building materials and are therefore also referred to as vital substances. They cannot be produced by the organism itself, but must be supplied with food.
Vital substances, especially vitamins and trace elements, are essential for all life processes (such as respiration, digestion, energy production, brain and nervous system function, growth and reproduction). On the other hand, many vital substances serve as building blocks for the most diverse tissues and organs.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women need significantly more vitamins, minerals and trace elements than non-pregnant women. The reasons for this additional need are obvious: Pregnant women in particular not only have to take care of their own organism, but also provide all the building blocks for the child to be born. When breastfeeding, the need for vital substances is even greater.
With a balanced diet and avoiding nicotine and alcohol, pregnant and breastfeeding women normally take in enough vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Nevertheless, deficiency symptoms can occur during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Frequent vomiting in early pregnancy can be the cause of a lack of vital substances.
The consequences of deficiency symptoms can be anemia and fatigue in the mother and growth retardation, skin and mucous membrane changes in the child.
Elevit pronatal contains the vital substances that are increasingly needed during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This prevents the occurrence of deficiency symptoms in mother and child. The folic acid in Elevit pronatal helps to prevent childhood malformations.

Elevit pronatal is taken:
To prevent and compensate for disorders caused by an unbalanced intake or deficiency of vitamins or minerals during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Contraindications
Do not take Elevit pronatal if you
- are allergic to any of the active substances or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- have too high blood levels of vitamin A and/or D in the body.
- treated with vitamin A or the chemically similar substances isotretinoin, etretinate. Beta carotene is considered a source of vitamin A. – suffer from severe renal impairment.
- have increased levels of calcium in your blood or increased excretion of calcium in your urine.
- suffer from disorders of the iron and/or copper metabolism.
interactions
The following medicines can affect or be affected by Elevit pronatal. If necessary, they should be used at least 2 hours before or after taking Elevit Pronatal.
- Levodopa (Antiparkinsonmittel)
- Means for the regulation of calcium metabolism, the active ingredient of which ends in “dronat”.
- Thyroxine and levothyroxine, medicines used to treat underactive thyroid
- Digitalis, a heart medication
- Antibiotics whose active ingredients end in “oxacin” or “cycline”.
- penicillamine, a drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and heavy metal poisoning
- thiazide water excretion diuretics (used to treat high blood pressure)
- Antacids, a remedy for stomach acid
- Trientine, a medicine used to treat build-up of copper in tissues, called Wilson’s disease
- Medicines used to treat viral infections
The blood fat-lowering drugs cholestyramine and colestipol can reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. If the use of this product is necessary during pregnancy or breast-feeding, you should inform your doctor. Special attention must be paid to whether the administration of Elevit pronatal is sufficient to prevent maternal and fetal/infant vitamin A, D and E deficiency.
Taking Elevit pronatal with food and drink
Oxalic acid (found in spinach and rhubarb) and phytic acid (found in whole grain products) can inhibit calcium absorption. Therefore, you should not take Elevit Pronatal within 2 hours of eating large amounts of these foods.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine.
Elevit pronatal is intended for use throughout pregnancy and while breastfeeding. However, the specified dosage should not be exceeded.
Doses of more than 10,000 international units (IU) of vitamin A per day can cause birth defects when given during the first trimester of pregnancy. Therefore, observe the information under “Warnings and Precautions”.
Permanent overdose of vitamin D could be harmful to the unborn and newborn. The vitamins and minerals in this medicine are excreted in breast milk. This must be taken into account when the infant receives appropriate supplements.
For pregnant and lactating women, 4,000 IU of vitamin D is considered safe. Elevit pronatal contains 500 IU/tablet.
Elevit pronatal contains lactose and soybean oil.
If you have been told by a doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, tell your doctor before taking Elevit pronatal.
Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to peanut or soy.
application
Always take Elevit Pronatal exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, the usual dose is 1 film-coated tablet daily whole with a glass of water, preferably with a meal.
If you suffer from morning sickness, you can also take the film-coated tablet at noon or in the evening.
The dividing notch is only for dividing the tablet to make it easier to swallow.
Duration of use
Take Elevit Pronatal from one month before conception (or from planning a pregnancy), throughout pregnancy and until you stop breast-feeding.
Children and adolescents
Elevit pronatal can be used in adolescent girls who are planning to become pregnant or who are breastfeeding. The same dosage as for adult women should be used. –
Patients with renal impairment:
Elevit pronatal must not be used by patients with impaired kidney function (see section 2 “Do not take Elevit pronatal if you have”).
Patients with hepatic impairment:
Elevit pronatal should be used under medical supervision in patients with hepatic impairment.
Elderly patients:
Elevit pronatal is used in women of childbearing potential. There is no need to use Elevit pronatal in elderly patients.

side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Side effects occur with the following frequency:
Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):
abdominal pain, gas, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.
Rare side effects (affects up to 1 in 1,000 people):
allergic reactions with symptoms such as swelling of the face, wheezing (wheezing)/difficulty breathing, skin reactions (rash, itching, redness, blisters), weak rapid pulse. Stop taking Elevit pronatal immediately and consult your doctor or pharmacist if allergic reactions/symptoms occur.
Not known (cannot be estimated from the available data):
- increased excretion of calcium in the urine
- Headaches, drowsiness, insomnia and nervousness.
- severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic reaction)
Due to the iron content of Elevit pronatal, the stool may darken, but this is harmless.
There may be yellow discoloration of the urine, which is harmless and is due to the vitamin B2 content.
