People in industrialized Western countries such as Austria (or Germany) can only get an insufficient supply of
selenium from the usual food. Selenium protects the body’s cells from free radicals formed by daily metabolic production and harmful environmental influences (ozone) and is involved in the production of thyroid hormones. In combination with the vitamins beta-carotene (pro-vitamin A), C and E, the cell-protecting functions of selenium are improved.
What happens in the event of a shortage? Increased susceptibility to infection and cancer, rheumatic diseases, high blood pressure, liver dysfunction, risk of infarction, bone metabolism disorders.
What hinders the recording? Artificial fertilizers and heavy metals bind selenium in the soil and thus cannot enter the food chain (soil – plant – animal – human), Austria’s soil is very low in selenium.
Tip. When traveling – take selenium regularly two weeks before the start of the trip to increase the immune system.
